Not quite a circumnavigation
by Jürgen Englerth
Our original plan was to circumnavigate Manhattan from Englewood Boat Basin on August 12, 2004. But the weather forecast predicted thunder storms in the NYC area. Wanting desperately to get our paddles wet, we (Bruce Taterka from Chester, NJ and Jürgen Englerth from Munich, Germany) decided to take a short trip on the Black River, which almost runs through Bruce's backyard.
Instead of the big city we encountered lots of birds, blooming flowers and a channel that was almost too narrow to navigate.
We quit at Cooper Mill, just before the white water starts, deciding to do that part the next time a thunderstorm hits NYC.
